Describe the types of barriers that you might encounter when translating and applying evidence for the evidence-based practice (EBP) quality improvement (QI) initiative. Be specific and explain how barriers may challenge the project.
With any initiative barriers are to be expected and good reviews take these into account from the beginning and throughout. Completing a SWOT analysis (strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats) can help identify internal and external barriers. A couple of barriers I would anticipate with the WPV QI would be time constraints, financial obligations/budgeting, lack of proper training, improper or ineffective communication of the initiative. Lack of gaining facility support, budgetary needs, consistent communication and little detail to training can derail any EBP/QI (White et al., 2024b).
Explain how, as a DNP-prepared nurse, you would address the barriers you identified. Be specific and describe specific approaches to address each barrier.
A DNP prepared nurse/leader understands the importance of many attributes for a successful QI. First, team involvement is mandatory for a successful translation of evidence into practice. Proper team involvement addresses education/training needs and gaps as well as communication about the project, concern and interventions. Second, supportive and visible leadership facilitates communication, practice, and vision sharing to the team. Executive leaders must walk the talk and share vision with those in the organization. This can be seen by setting priorities, support in problem solving, resource management and being in touch with barriers identified. Lastly, planning cannot be underestimated with an EBP/QI initiative. Although many timelines are established these must be flexible to accommodate for barriers and learning. Within planning the EBP/QI must be discussed, goals set, and a translation method agreed upon (White et al., 2024b).
