Presentation to Informatics Staff

Hello everyone! My name is _____and today I will be presenting to the informatics staff to discuss the relationship between the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards and the quality of outcomes. I will also be discussing how the data can contribute to either enhancing or strengthening those outcomes. Nursing Informatics must incorporate evidence-based practices into care and research.

Why are Standards Important to Follow?

Standards in nursing practice allow nurses to apply evidence-based practices in their daily routines. The clinical practices are more standardized with the help of guidelines assisting the nurses to have safe practices (Zhang et al., 2021). Nurses feel more accountable for the decisions they make when there are standards to follow. Patients receive quality care improving their outcomes and satisfaction as there is consistency due to the standards. These standards also work as a measurement tool to evaluate the proficiency of the practices being followed.  The administrators can also use the standards to educate the staff and ensure their staff has advanced safety practices.

Examples of the Standards of Practice

Some of the examples of the standards of practices that have been published by the ANA are to have a pertinent collection of data or information, analyze the data to make diagnoses, make a plan with identified outcomes on an individual basis, plan strategies to achieve those outcomes, implementing the plan, apply coordination of care with collaboration and effective communication, promote health care, and evaluate the progress of the plan (The American Nurses Association, n.d.). A specific example to illustrate the use of standards in practice would be a nurse checking up on a patient.

Who has symptoms similar to diabetes, gathering data related to any family history before diagnosis, and once the diagnosis is complete the nurse would make a care plan that is sensitive to the patient’s religious and cultural values and provides a necessary guideline to the self-management of diabetes. All the data of the patient would be entered into the EHR technology to store the patient’s data so it can stay updated and be accessed later.

The nurse would show skills of enhanced collaboration and communication with the patient as well as fellow workers. Using all the information, this nurse would create a presentation to promote healthcare awareness with the patients and the other nurses. The nurse would use all the relevant tools to evaluate the progress of the care plan.

Applying Theoretical Frameworks or Models

The Empowerment Informatics Framework centers on an inclusive environment and nursing that focuses on the empowered patient. The role of this framework is to utilize the health-enabling technologies that would help maintain a relationship of collaboration between nurses and patients (Themes, 2021). This framework focuses on valid data to enhance patient outcomes and empowers nurses when making decisions. It incorporates ethical behavior and identifies patients’ characteristics, relationships in their behavior, and goals.

The value of this framework is that it relies on patient-defined goals, self-management, and health force. The nurse seems to interact with the patient with the help of health-enabling technology to have effective communication that would allow self-management and health force. As the nurse dealing with a diabetic patient, the nurse would review data and use all the knowledge to assist the patient in self-management and carry out all the research for any changes or interventions that can be implemented. The type of research that is carried out in this framework is both quantitative and qualitative (Themes, 2021). This allows a patient-centered approach making self-management a measurable outcome.

Lewin’s Change Theory allows the care providers to be adapted to the change applying the standards of practices to be applied effectively. The theory includes stages of unfreezing where there is an understanding that the change is needed, moving where the process of change initiates, and refreezing allows the change to be established with improved practices. It allows the establishment of goals and action plans along with the acceptability of the change (Barrow et al., 2022).
